View of a student's cap during graduation.

As a family member, we know that your student's success in their career and life is very important. It’s important to us too; that's why we created this guide.

How to Talk About Life After College

Caution: You may cringe when you hear the words...

“I want to change my major”
“I’m not sure what I want to do for the rest of my life.”

Your first reaction might be to encourage your student to stick with their first career decision. In reality, that may actually hinder their growth toward a career path that fits them. We recommend starting with a conversation.

How to Keep Your Student on Track

Planning for the next step is key and ensures that your student has developed a track record of successful experiences. No matter how close your student is to graduation, we recommend conducting a "career check-up" at least once a year with the Career Design Center.

Your student should start the job search early – as much as two semesters to a year prior to graduation. We provide assistance with developing resumes and cover letters, job search techniques, practice interviewing, opportunities to network with employers and more. Be open to new opportunities, geographic locations, and internships as a way to secure employment.
