Murdock Rewrites the Record Book

UB linebacker Red Murdock entered the 2025 season determined to make history.

“The all-time college football [forced] fumble record is 16. I’m at 11,” Murdock said in an interview with Paul Peck, the Voice of the Bulls, just before UB’s season opener in August. “I plan on breaking it.”

He did exactly that in the Bulls’ 28-3 win over Bowling Green on Nov. 1, when he recorded his 17th career forced fumble, surpassing the previous record held by another UB great—Khalil Mack.

Murdock’s other on-field achievements include Bahamas Bowl MVP and being named a second-team All-American by three organizations (including The Associated Press), a National Football Foundation (NFF) scholar-athlete, and a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top football scholar-athlete.

celebration on the field.

He’s just as outstanding off the field, in the classroom and in the community.

He graduated from UB magna cum laude in May 2024 with a degree in psychology and is now pursuing a master’s in education studies at UB. He also founded and directs Virginia Homework Helpers, a free K-12 tutoring initiative supporting students in his home state.

Murdock says his community work has helped him find purpose in life outside of football. “Coming from Petersburg, Virginia, I’ve seen a lot of people miss out on a lot of opportunities,” he said in an interview with the NFF ahead of the Campbell Trophy ceremony. “I think education could be a great outlet to really change their lives for the best.”
