Extension of Stay

If you will not complete your internship by the expected date, you must apply for an extension. This must be done before your current DS-2019 expires.

What is a DS-2019 Extension?

If you will not complete your internship program by the expected completion date in Section 3 of your current DS-2019, you must apply for an extension and receive a new DS-2019 with a new end date.

How long can a J-1 Student Intern participate in an internship program?

J-1 Student Interns can participate in the internship program for up to 12 months for each degree/major. Extensions beyond 12 months are not possible. 

When to Apply

You should submit all required documents one month before your DS-2019 expires. Please refer to number 3 on your DS-2019 to determine your DS-2019 expiration date. 

Application Process

To apply for an extension, submit the following documents to ISS prior to the expiration date on your current DS-2019:

  • Completed DS-7002 (Training/Internship Placement Plan)
    • Your UB supervisor should complete this form and include the new internship dates. You must also sign the form. 
  • Financial documents which prove that you have sufficient funding to support yourself for the additional time you are requesting. See Acceptable Financial Document Information.
    • Contact ISS for an estimate of how much money you are required to show. 
  • Proof of health insurance. A receipt or insurance card indicating that you have proper health insurance coverage for the additional time you are requesting. 

Processing Times

Processing times vary, but generally you will receive a new DS-2019 in 5-7 days.
