"Groups, Manifolds, and Higher Invariants of Elliptic Operators"

Join us for the 2017 Myhill Lecture Series by Guoliang Yu. His lecture series is entitled "Groups, Manifolds, and Higher Invariants of Elliptic Operators".

Dr. Yu is professor and Powell Chair in Mathematics at Texas A & M University. The three lectures take place Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, September 18, 19 and 20, at 4:00 p.m. in Room 250 of the Mathematics building. The first talk is followed by a reception in Room 240 of the math building. The second and third talks are preceded by tea at 3:30 p.m. in Room 240.

Research Interests: Noncommutative geometry, K-theory of operator algebras, index theory, topology and analysis of manifolds, geometric group theory

Guoliang Yu, Professor and Powell Chair in Mathematics, Texas A & M University

Lecture 1: Rigidity Problems in Geometry and Topology

Abstract: In this lecture, I will introduce certain rigidity problems in geometry and topology of manifolds and give a survey on their recent progress.

Lecture 2: Geometry and complexity of groups

Abstract: In this lecture, I will describe various notions of complexity in geometric group theory and explain how these concepts are related to rigidity of manifolds.

Lecture 3: Higher invariants of elliptic operators

Abstract: In this lecture, I will introduce primary and secondary invariants of elliptic operators and apply these invariants in the study of rigidity and nonrigidity problems in geometry and topology.
