VcXsrv

VcXsrv provides Microsoft Windows systems with a way to display software written for the X Window System, either locally or remotely. Here are instructions for how to install and configure it.

Installation

For SENS-supported Microsoft Windows systems, VcXsrv can be installed using Software Center.

For personally-owned computers, follow these instructions:

  1.  Go to the VcXsrv download page.
  2. Click on the folder that has the highest number (should be the one directly below the "Parent folder" title.
  3. Download the installer that is appropriate to the operating system on your computer (32-bit or 64-bit). The installer will be either the "vcxsrv.x.xx.x.x.installer.exe" file or the "vcxsrv-64.x.xx.x.x.installer.exe" file.
  4.  Double click on the VcXsrv installer file that you downloaded in the previous section.
  5. Select Full for the "type of install" and uncheck the "Desktop Shortcuts" box if you do not want icons on the Desktop (leave all other boxes checked).
  6. Click the "Next" button.
  7. At the "Installation Folder" screen, keep the default "Destination Folder" and click Install.
  8. Click Close at the "Completed" screen.
