University at Buffalo scientist Amit Goyal has been named associate editor-in-chief of The Bridge, the flagship quarterly journal of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

The Bridge publishes opinion and analysis on engineering research, education and practice, as well as science and technology policy, and the roles of engineering and technology in society.

It aims to inform and stimulate debate and dialogue among NAE members, policymakers, educators, business leaders and others. Its readership includes members of Congress, as well as leaders of federal agencies, universities, libraries and more.

Goyal, a SUNY Distinguished Professor and SUNY Empire Innovation Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, is an internationally recognized expert in renewable energy materials. He specializes in high-temperature superconducting materials that have applications in the generation, storage and transmission of electricity, and can be used in motors, magnets and other devices.

He is director of the multidisciplinary UB Initiative on Plastics Recycling Research and Innovation, a New York State Center of Excellence based on convergent research. Previously, he served as founding director of the UB RENEW Institute.

Goyal also recently served as guest editor for the 2025 fall issue of The Bridge issue focused on Materials Genome Initiative’s progress and future outlook, showcasing advances in autonomous experimentation, sustainable polymers, next-generation batteries, and the broader role of artificial intelligence in engineering. He recently hosted the inaugural Bridge publication webinar and panel discussion on this topic.
