Membership Benefits

Becoming a member of NeMLA means becoming part of a community of scholars engaged in cutting-edge academic conversation. If that's not enough, here are 12 more benefits of joining the NeMLA family!

Awards and Fellowship Opportunities

NeMLA sponsors several awards and fellowships to promote new scholarship in modern languages, including:

Special Events

Members have the opportunity of attending our Special Events in the different areas of scholarship showcased and sponsored at NeMLA: invited speakers, fiction and poetry readings, film screenings, music, and more!

  • Thursday Opening Address
  • Friday Keynote
  • Saturday Area Special Events (usually six or seven)

Interactive Workshops

Each year, the Board plans several interactive professionalization workshops with people in relevant fields (such as acquisitions editors of university presses, journal editors, and grant-writing officers) on issues such as:

  • book and article publication
  • promotion and tenure
  • writing grant proposals
  • negotiating the job market

Job Clinic and Mentorship Programs

The Job Clinic is sponsored by the Graduate Student Caucus, and graduate students, contingent and early-career faculty seeking employment meet one-on-one with a senior scholar to discuss CV and job application strategies.

The Women's and Gender Studies Mentorship Program is run by the Women’s and Gender Studies Caucus and is an interdisciplinary mentoring program which pairs senior faculty mentors with junior faculty and doctoral students.

Publishing Opportunities and Free Subscriptions

Members of the association can submit essays and book reviews to NeMLA's 3 peer-reviewed journals:

Book Award winners receive assistance from NeMLA with contacting presses about publication of their manuscripts, at the winner’s discretion.

Networking

With attendees from all over the world, NeMLA has a large group of long-time members who like to return again and again to the friendliest regional conference we know. Attend one of our many receptions to mingle and meet new people. Or join a caucus:

Advertising Opportunities and Promotion

Take advantage of MLS’s broad readership and NeMLA’s large annual convention membership to announce your new book:

  • MLS offers a special advertising rate to members with books completed during the last year or about to appear.
  • If you are an author, please bring flyers promoting your recent book to the Annual Convention to display in our Exhibit Hall. Please make sure your flyer lists the time and place of your session so attendees can meet you in person!
  • We are especially proud of the anthologies and essay collections that originated in NeMLA sessions, and we would like to list your book on our website.

Discount Hotel and Travel Rates

Individuals attending the annual convention can take advantage of the special rates we negotiate.

Social Engagement

The Women's and Gender Studies Caucus hosts the Women's and Gender Studies Mentorship Program breakfast for its mentors, mentees, and caucus members.

We host a free Sunday Membership Brunch, which allows all members to converse and network.

NeMLA's Undergraduate Forum

Meet our aspiring young scholars and find out about their latest interests and research at NeMLA's Undergraduate Forum, an annual convention event.

Become a Leader

NeMLA members may volunteer to serve on the Board of the organization and become part of the decision-making process while adding to your administrative experience. Nominations for most open positions are due August 15, with elections completed by February.

Explore the Northeast

NeMLA is a regional convention that attracts scholars from around the world. This convention allows members to see new cities throughout the northeastern United States, with previous conventions held in Baltimore, Boston, Montreal, and Toronto.
