Tenure Clock Stoppages

Faculty may request a stoppage of the clock toward continuing appointment (tenure) for any of the reasons specified below by submitting the appropriate form for the basis of your request and your appointment type.

1. Birth, Adoption, Foster Care Placement of a Child

This clock stoppage does not require approval, it does require notifications to all supervisory levels. The signatory sequence is as follows:

  1. Faculty informs and submits completed form to the Chair
  2. Chair submits form to the Dean
  3. Dean sends form to the Office of Faculty Affairs
  4. Office of Faculty Affairs submits signed form to Human Resources and notifies decanal unit

2. Critical Life Event (e.g. Personal/Family Member Illness, Elder Care Issue)

This clock stoppage requires Dean approval and a title change. The request/signatory sequence is as follows:

  1. Faculty submits written request and completed form to Chair
  2. Chair submits memo and form to the Dean
  3. Dean submits memo and form to Employee Relations (ER)
  4. ER shares material with Office of Faculty Affairs
  5. Office of Faculty Affairs submits signed form to Human Resources and notifies Dean

3. Special Circumstances

This clock stoppage requires Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs approval and a title change.  Special Circumstances must be based on a research setback due to circumstances beyond the faculty member's control. Because the individual circumstances vary, these clock stops are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Examples of reasons that have been approved include delays in setting up labs or obtaining equipment, data destruction, animal-related research complications, and unexpected disruption in the publication process beyond the author’s control. The request/signatory sequence is as follows:

  1. Faculty submits written request and completed form to Chair
  2. Chair sends memo and form to the Dean
  3. Dean submits memo and form to Employee Relations (ER)
  4. ER shares material with Office of Faculty Affairs
  5. Office of Faculty Affairs submits signed form to Human Resources and notifies Dean
