Public Health Challenges in Various Populations

Seeking students to research public health challenges in various populations, with a goal of developing classroom resources, tools and strategies.

Project description

Students will explore health disparities associated with specific populations of interest. Proposed populations include but are not limited to:

  • College Students 
  • LGBTQ+ 
  • Native Populations 
  • Immigrant Populations 
  • Rural Populations 
  • Individuals with Disabilities 
  • The Elderly 

Students will develop resources and tools to be used in Public Health classes and shared with the lay public to deepen understanding and sensitivity related to these challenges.

Project outcome

Students will select a population of interest and complete the following tasks:

  1. Create a brief powerpoint presentation that discusses the challenges this population faces 
  2. Pick a topic that affects this population such as but not limited to: substance abuse, mental health, health care access, food insecurity, or other emerging issues and find a recent (2010 or newer) research article that explains this issue. 
  3. Create a quick guide to help students or the lay public learn about this article and its impact on health. Include questions that would be thought provoking to answer from this article. 
  4. Be creative: think of a way to have other students learn about this problem within a population, create a case study, game, worksheet or other materials that students would be excited to engage with

Preparation

To engage with this project, you will work through a series of Project-Based Collaboration digital badges to guide your experience. These badges will:

  1. Guide you in setting your goals and intentions as well as gaining additional context,
  2. Enhance your collaboration with your mentor/partner,
  3. Support your reflection and help you integrate your learning with your academic and professional goals.

All students who wish to participate in a project on the Project Portal must first complete the Project Preparation Digital Badge. First, contact the project mentor to discuss availability and after you’ve received approval, you can start the Project Preparation Digital Badge.

Preparation guidance

Once you have registered for the Project Preparation Digital Badge, you will receive further instructions related to the activities you will need to complete. In addition, you will also complete the following preparation activities for this particular project:

  • Students must develop an annotated bibliography related to the topic of focus. They are encouraged to meet with a Subject Librarian either in-person or virtually to explore appropriate resources. Bibliography must include at least one recent research article that explains and provides data related to the topic and population.
