Students interested in PhD study are driven, dedicated, and among UB’s best and brightest. We want to support you along your path, which is why, as a McNair Scholar, you have access to:

  • Free GRE preparatory sessions.
  • Faculty and graduate student mentors.
  • Funding for graduate school visits and research presentations at professional conferences.
  • Graduate school advising and application fee waivers.
  • Paid, eight-week summer research internship.
  • Free supplies! McNair Scholars have access to all the materials needed to prepare a high-quality portfolio, research poster, resume, etc.

Requirements

As a McNair Scholar, you must fulfill the following requirements to remain in good standing and maximize the benefits you’ll receive from working with us.

  • Be an active participant.
  • Attend a one-credit weekly seminar.
  • Participate in at least one summer research internship experience (May-July). Students receive a $2,800 stipend and are required to dedicate 20 hours per week to faculty-supervised research.
  • Prepare and complete graduate school applications and take any necessary standardized tests.
  • Present your faculty-supervised research at an undergraduate research conference.
  • Present your faculty-supervised research at other discipline-specific conferences, if available.
  • Travel to various graduate schools of interest.
