Digital Accessibility and Universal Design for Learning

The Teaching Table Podcast | ADA Mini-Series | Ep. 4

Published February 2, 2026

Universal Design for Learning becomes more actionable when faculty connect inclusive teaching strategies with the technical standards that shape how students experience digital course materials. In this special edition of the Teaching Table Podcast, Maggie Grady and Sarah Guglielmi from the University at Buffalo’s Office of Curriculum, Assessment and Teaching Transformation (CATT) explore how digital accessibility supports UDL as the campus prepares for ADA Title II regulation changes taking effect in April 2026.

The conversation defines UDL as an accessible and inclusive pedagogical approach designed to support learner variability in every classroom. Sarah explains that students engage with information in different ways, whether through reading, listening, reflection, discussion or hands-on practice. She also highlights that learner variability includes students with documented disabilities, temporary conditions such as concussion recovery and non-native English speakers who may benefit from additional support in how content is delivered.

Maggie and Sarah emphasize that digital accessibility strengthens UDL by ensuring course content is designed to work effectively across platforms and assistive technologies. Faculty are encouraged to begin by selecting a Spring 2026 course to review using CATT’s Digital Accessibility Review Checklist and to start with practical improvements such as using headings for navigation, ensuring color contrast and alt text for images, and providing captions and transcripts for recordings. These strategies help instructors build more usable, inclusive learning experiences while supporting student success across UB.
