Beyond Compliance: Building Accessible and Inclusive Classrooms

The Teaching Table Podcast | ADA Mini-Series | Ep. 5

Published March 2, 2026

This episode of the Teaching Table Podcast closes CATT’s Accessible and Inclusive Pedagogy mini-series by exploring how faculty can move beyond compliance to build classrooms where all students feel welcome and supported. Maggie Grady and Sarah Guglielmi discuss the difference between accessibility and inclusion, emphasizing that accessibility focuses on removing barriers to participation, while inclusion is about cultivating a sense of belonging and value for every student.

Sarah highlights practical steps instructors can take to create a more accessible and inclusive classroom culture, including setting a welcoming tone from day one, inviting students to share challenges and feedback throughout the semester, and responding with empathy and flexibility. Faculty are also encouraged to continue improving digital course materials using CATT’s Digital Accessibility Review Checklist, which provides guidance for remediating Word documents, PowerPoints, videos, PDFs and other course content in preparation for the upcoming ADA Title II digital accessibility requirements.
