UB’s Center for Integrated Global Biomedical Sciences (CIGBS) has been nominated for a 2023 Prix Galien USA award in the “Incubators, Accelerators and Equity” category.

The Galien Foundation is a global institution dedicated to honoring innovators in the life sciences.

“It is an extreme honor to be nominated for a Prix Galien award,” says Gene Morse, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences who serves as director of CIGBS, an international hub that brings together scientific disciplines in a nontraditional way to address regional, as well as global challenges.

UB is among 13 laboratories, university centers and other institutions nominated in the “Incubators, Accelerators and Equity” category. Now in its second year, this Prix Galien award category acknowledges the role played by these institutions in guiding the next wave of innovators. Institutions are recognized for their ability to offer a range of mentoring skills, including clinical trial design expertise, legal counsel, lab space, professional development, peer-to-peer support, free access to leading advisers and economic support to advance life science innovation. 

“I am grateful to my colleagues whose contributions to the CIGBS have led to this nomination,” Morse says. “It has been fulfilling to work with the esteemed faculty, staff members and students at UB and our global partners who are dedicated to tackling global challenges within the biomedical sciences.”

CIGBS focuses on the underrepresentation of women in science that can only be addressed through capacity-building initiatives that prioritize recruitment of women into research and education training programs. CIGBS also employs a highly innovative model that addresses the challenges of linking innovative research with strategies for attaining the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and is providing a foundation for this through global health projects in Africa and the Caribbean.

Winners will be announced during the Prix Galien USA Forum on Oct. 26 at the Alexandria Center for Life Science in New York City.
