UB SPPS showcases educational and intellectual innovation at AACP Annual Meeting

Faculty and staff from the University at Buffalo (UB) School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPPS) attended the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Annual Meeting in Aurora, CO, from July 22-25 to share our school’s cutting-edge research and educational innovation with the national pharmacy academic community.

Panels and sessions

William Prescott, Jr., PharmD, chair and clinical professor, Division of Education and Teaching Innovation, Department of Pharmacy Practice, moderated and participated in a panel entitled “Fanning the Flames of Faculty Professional Development: How to Keep the Fire Going,” which discussed the need for department chairs and administrators to foster an environment that encourages faculty growth and development, particularly in the early and middle stages of their career to avoid stagnation.

Prescott also presented a panel entitled “‘Put Your Oxygen Mask on First Before Helping Others’: Faculty Well-being Starts with the Leader,” and discussed how administrators are responsible for promoting an environment that mitigates the risk of burnout among their faculty while also attending to their own well-being.

Nicole Albanese, PharmD, clinical associate professor, Division of Outcomes and Practice Advancement, Department of Pharmacy Practice, participated in a session entitled “Quality is a Habit: Improving Quality Assurance in Experiential Education,” and discussed tangible ways to implement experiential education quality assurance processes in the areas of preceptors, sites, curriculum and students.

Erin Slazak, PharmD, director of Postgraduate Education and clinical associate professor, Division of Outcomes and Practice Advancement, Department of Pharmacy Practice, chair, AACP Self-Care/Nonprescription Medicine Special Interest Group (SIG), participated in a panel discussion entitled “Self-Care Therapeutics/Nonprescription Medicine SIG Networking Session,” for SIG members to review current topics in self-care education and to plan for upcoming SIG activities.

Fred Doloresco, PharmD, MS, clinical associate professor, research assistant professor, Division of Outcomes and Practice Advancement, Department of Pharmacy Practice, moderated a panel entitled “Technology in Pharmacy Education and Learning SIG Networking Session,” a networking session for AACP’s Technology in Pharmacy Education and Learning SIG.

Doloresco also participated in a session entitled “Empowering Faculty to Integrate Digital Health into Pharmacy Education,” a panel for pharmacy educators to discuss their experiences integrating digital health in the classroom.

Nicole Cieri-Hutcherson, PharmD, clinical associate professor, Division of Outcomes and Practice Advancement, Department of Pharmacy Practice, participated in a panel entitled “Overturning Reproductive Health Ethics: Changing Pharmacy Curricula with Changing Legislation,” and discussed the importance of reproductive health ethics and strategies to successfully integrate it into pharmacy curricula.

Exhibits and Posters

UB SPPS was represented at an exhibit booth, where conference attendees stopped by to talk with our faculty and staff to learn more about our renewed PharmD student learning, intellectual innovation, research and scholarship.
