Women's Health Initiative Fund

Help advance the discoveries from a monumental research study through this fund.

The Buffalo-based Women’s Health Initiative is a nationwide research study of older women. For a quarter century, UB has been a key leader in this initiative, and our discoveries have transformed our understanding and helped benefit millions of women, here and worldwide.

Specifically, the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) is a long-term, national health study that has focused on strategies for preventing heart disease, breast and colorectal cancer, and osteoporotic fractures in postmenopausal women.

UB is one of the original 16 “vanguard clinical centers” selected to participate in the initiative, and also serves as the WHI Northeast Regional Center, managing data collection and scientific coordination among nine WHI-affiliated institutions in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions.

Nationwide, there are more than 162,000 participants enrolled in the WHI. Locally, there are nearly 4,000 participants from western New York. The primary endpoints of at least three WHI clinical trials have been published. Further results from these studies will continue to be published.
