UB Email Changes

UB’s email service is changing for some alumni.

  • August 2025 grads: @buffalo.edu addresss will no longer be available after March 15, 2026.
  • February 2026 grads: @buffalo.edu addresss will no longer be available after Aug. 15, 2026.
  • Grads prior to May 2025: UBmail accounts will no longer be available starting in spring 2026.*

Keeping your data secure

Due to cybersecurity concerns, SUNY has implemented new, more stringent policies that mean UB cannot provide UBmail for alumni in the long-term.

We realize this is disruptive and understand this change may impact your personal email communication, and we want to provide helpful information with enough time for you to take action to preserve important information in your buffalo.edu email.

Once mailboxes are deactivated, any password recovery messages or email sent to the @buffalo.edu account will not be accessible.

Why is UBmail access changing?

In 2009, UB began allowing alumni to keep their “@buffalo.edu” email addresses after graduation. Because of new SUNY security requirements and the costs of maintaining these accounts in a compliant way, in addition to UB’s own assessment of the risks involved, the university can no longer offer this option to alumni.

As with other IT services such as UB Box and UB Learns, @buffalo.edu email accounts will remain active for six months after graduation and will then be deactivated.

Take steps to prepare

Please prepare for this change of service as soon as possible:

  • Update your contact information so we can stay in touch
  • Back up what matters. Export any important emails, files or contacts you want to keep before the deadline.
    • For Aug. 2025 and Feb. 2026 grads, this means March 15, 2026 and Aug. 15, 2026, respectively.
    •  Graduates prior to May 2025 were sent their deactivation date in an email on Feb. 23, 2026.
  • Let people know. Share your new email address with friends, family and services like job boards, social media and streaming platforms.

Changes to other UB-provided services

Access to other UB-provided software and services also expires six months after graduation per the existing policy. This includes Microsoft 365 (Office apps, OneDrive, etc.), UBbox, Zoom (UB licensed), UB Learns, Panopto (recorded lectures and videos), UBfs (UB File Service) and UB personal websites.

Who this impacts

UB is ending email service for alumni due to changes SUNY has made in its cybersecurity policy. Going forward, UBmail will be available for six months after a student graduates.

  • Aug. 2025 grads will be affected by this change on March 15, 2026.
  • Feb. 2026 grads will be affected by this change on Aug. 15, 2026.
  • *Alumni who graduated before May 2025: If you log in at least once every 90 days, your account will remain active until spring 2026, when the new policy begins to apply to you. NOTE: After 90 days of non-use, accounts become inactive. If the account remains inactive, it will follow UBIT policy and be deleted after 120 total days. Your content will not be retrievable.

Comprehensive information, instructions and helpful resources about the change are being sent regularly to all impacted alumni.

Who is NOT impacted

This change does not affect you if you are a:

  • UB retiree
  • graduate who works at the university
  • graduate who is enrolled as a student

Your UBmail account will remain active until your status changes. Retirees must sign up for Duo two-factor authentication and are still required to log in every 90 days to keep the account active.
