Scholarships and Funding Opportunities

UB administers more than $430 million in scholarships and financial aid each year and offers the most valuable merit scholarships in the SUNY system.

From merit-based and athletic scholarships to awards funded by alumni and friends of the university, there are plenty of opportunities to help you fund your education. Combine all of that with Western New York’s low cost of living, and your UB degree becomes an investment that pays off.

Scholarships for First-Year Domestic Students

High-achieving domestic first-year out-of-state students are automatically considered for the Provost Scholarship. Award amounts are based on academic merit and cost of attendance. No additional application is needed. These scholarships are renewable for up to four years for domestic students who meet continuing eligibility requirements. Provost Scholarship awards must be used for a student's direct cost of attendance.

Academically exceptional first-year students may earn a four-year UB Presidential Scholarship, one of the most selective and highly valued UB awards. The Presidential Scholarship requires a separate application and is available through the University Honors College

Presidential scholars participate in the University Honors College and must maintain rigorous academic standards to retain their award.

High-achieving first-year domestic students from New York State are considered for Pride of New York Scholarships. Award amounts are based on academic merit. Funds are exclusively for non-tuition costs such as fees. No additional application is needed. These scholarships are renewable for either two or four years for domestic students who meet continuing eligibility requirements.

These scholarships are awarded to academically competitive first-year students who are eligible for the Daniel Acker Scholars Program. Applicants are notified and invited to participate via email if they are deemed eligible. These scholarships are renewable for four years for domestic students who maintain continuing eligibility requirements.

Scholarships for International Students

The University at Buffalo offers scholarships in varying amounts to qualified incoming international first-year/first-time students. Scholarship awards vary and are renewable with good academic standing. The Flagship Scholarship may be combined with other UB scholarships.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to incoming first-year international students with no completed coursework or credits at a postsecondary institution.
  • Available for international students enrolling in the fall or spring semester.

Application and Review Process

  • All admitted international students are automatically considered for scholarships during the holistic review process, considering more than just GPA and test scores.
  • Scholarship awards can be found within your Applicant Status Page and are renewable for up to four years, provided students meet continuing eligibility requirements.

Transfer Student Scholarships

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to incoming transfer students.
  • Available for students enrolling in the fall or spring semester.

Application and Review Process

  • All admitted students are automatically considered, and scholarships are based on your transfer GPA.
  • Scholarship awards can be found within your Applicant Status Page. They are renewable for up to two years, provided students meet continuing eligibility requirements.
  • Scholarship decisions are sent in late November for spring students and early April for fall students.

Other Scholarships

The University at Buffalo offers NCAA Division I athletics as part of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). We recruit athletes from all over the world. Student athletes are usually at the top of their division or conference levels in secondary schools. We offer athletic scholarships in many different sports.

Interested students should fill out the UB athletic recruitment questionnaire.

All first-year students admitted directly into the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree program through our Early Assurance Program 2+4=6 option will earn a Dean’s Leadership Scholarship upon successful transition to the professional (3rd ) year of study. No additional application is needed.

The University at Buffalo is proud to be an early adopter of the SUNY Military Tuition Scholarship program. Beginning with the spring 2026 semester, UB will offer a scholarship to align UB’s undergraduate in-state per credit tuition rate with the current Federal Tuition Assistance rate, which is presently set at $250 per credit hour.

The SUNY Military Tuition Scholarship will be available to active-duty service members, members of the National Guard and members of the Reserves enrolled in eligible undergraduate programs.

The SUNY Military Tuition Scholarship will be applied to tuition charges before all other financial aid.

Additional Funding Opportunities

Scholarships and grants are also available from various nonprofit and service organizations, as well as government programs. Research your options early in the application process to find great funding opportunities that may help cover your educational costs.

UB's Career Design Center provides a list of available on-campus job opportunities. Common positions include working in offices, laboratories, libraries, residence halls and dining facilties.

Additionally, students can meet with professionals in the Career Design Center to work on their resume, practice their interview skills and more.
