Getting the Activation Key and Software

 In order to install Mathematica, request the activation key from the vendor. The key will be emailed to your UB email address. You can then install the software.

  1. Go to the Enter your complete email address in the Login With Wolfram ID field. 
  2. Click Create Account.
  3. Enter your complete email address, first name and last name in the fields as requested.
  4. Create a password of at least 6 characters. Enter it in both the Password and Confirm password fields.
  5. Enter the captcha code that appears.
  6. Click Create Wolfram ID.
  7. In your UB email, reply to the confirmation email from Wolfram.
  8. Go to the Wolfram Activation Key Request Form
  9. Enter your complete email address in the Login With Wolfram ID field.
  10. Enter your Wolfram password you created in the Password field.
  11. Click Sign in.
  12. In My Products and Services, click View.
  13. Click Mathematica for Students for Sites.
  14. Click View Activation Keys.Wolfram Activation Key Request Form
  15. Click the UB Students: Download Mathematica from UB button to download the software.

Installing the Software

  1. Open the zip file or  This will reveal two more zipped files, as well as
  2. Open the zip file. This will create a icon in the same folder.
  3. Click the icon and drag it into your Applications folder.
  4. Navigate to your Applications folder and double-click folder.
  5. A warning will appear about opening Mathematica. Click Open.
  6. A warning about accepting incoming connections will appear. Click Allow.
  7. The Wolfram Mathematica icon should appear in your Dock. Click it to reveal the activation window.
  8. Enter the activation key that was sent to your UB email address and click Activate.
  9. You must accept the terms of the license agreement to activate Mathematica. Select I accept the terms of this agreement and click OK.
  10. Return to the Mathematica folder.
  11. Open the other zip file, to reveal the .pkg file.
  12. Double-click Extras.pkg. The launcher window will open.
  13. Click Continue.
  14. Click Install.
  15. The installation is complete. You may need to close and re-start your browser.


Mathematica is available for download from UB for UB student, faculty and staff personal use. This software is not licensed for federally sponsored research.
