Mathematica

Use Mathematica: math software that integrates numeric and symbolic computations, graphics, programming language documentation and connectivity to other applications.

Note: This software can be downloaded multiple times and does not limit the number of downloads.

Downloading Mathematica for Linux

Mathematica is available for home installations on personally owned computers. This software is not licensed for federally sponsored research.

Get Activation Keys

In order to install Mathematica, you need to first request the activation key from the vendor. The key will be emailed to your UB email address. You can then install the software.

  1. Go to the Enter your complete buffalo.edu email address in the Login With Wolfram ID field. 
  2. Click Create Account.
  3. Enter your complete buffalo.edu email address, first name and last name in the fields as requested.
  4. Create a password of at least 6 characters. Enter it in both the Password and Confirm password fields.
  5. Click Create Wolfram ID.
  6. In your UB email, reply to the confirmation email from Wolfram.
  7. Go to the Wolfram Activation Key Request Form
  8. Enter your complete buffalo.edu email address in the Login With Wolfram ID field.
  9. Enter your Wolfram password you created in the Password field.
  10. Click Sign in. Account activation keys will appear.

Install and Activate Mathematica

  1. Download the software from UB and unzip the file.
  2. Mathematica 8 installation should be done with root privileges. If installing from a download file, change the directory to the downloaded file location. If you are in GUI mode, press Ctrl-Alt-F2 to change to text mode or run in Terminal.
  3. Enter sudo sh Mathematica_11.1.0_LINUX.sh or sudo sh Mathematica_11.1.1_LINUX.sh to start the installer.
  4. Press Enter to accept the default installation directory for Mathematica, or enter a new location and press Enter.
  5. After the files are copied to your hard drive, press Enter to accept the default location in which to copy the executable scripts, or type a new location and press Enter.
  6. When the installation is complete, exit Terminal mode or press Ctrl-Alt-F7.
  7. cd to the Executables directory in the location you saved them. 
  8. Typr Mathematica and press Enter.
  9. The Wolfram Product Activation dialog appears. Enter your activation key from the Wolfram website. Click Activate to activate online.
  10. You must accept the terms of the license agreement to activate the software. Select I accept the terms of this agreement and click OK.

Mathematica may be downloaded by UB students, faculty and staff for use on personally owned computers.
