Downloading Mathematica for Linux

Use Mathematica: math software that integrates numeric and symbolic computations, graphics, programming language documentation and connectivity to other applications.

Availability

  • Use Mathematica remotely through My Virtual Computing Lab.
  • Use Mathematica in Computing Sites.
  • Launch Mathematica from UBUnix.
  • Students: Download Mathematica from UB.
  • Faculty and Staff: Download Mathematica from the vendor for personal use.

Mathematica may be downloaded by faculty, staff and students.

Downloading Mathematica for Linux for Faculty/Staff Personal Use

Faculty and Staff can request a copy for personal use directly from Wolfram. UB's site license number is L3321-2498.

Downloading and Installing Mathematica for Linux for Students

Mathematica is available for download from UB for student home installations. This software is not licensed for federally sponsored research.

In order to install Mathematica, you need to first request the activation key from the vendor. The key will be emailed to your UB email address. You can then install the software.

  1. Go to the Wolfram Activation Key Request Form
  2. Enter your UB email address in the Login With Wolfram ID field. Select Continue without signing in.
  3. In the Activation Key Request form:
    • Enter your first name, last name and UB email address in their respective fields.
    • Select Mathematica for Students for Sites (Single Machine) from the Select a Product drop-down.
    • Select Linux in the Platform drop-down.
  4. Click Submit. The activation key will be sent to your UB email address.
  5. Download the software.
  6. Mathematica 8 installation should be done with root privileges. If installing from a download file, change the directory to the downloaded file location. If you are in GUI mode, press Ctrl-Alt-F2 to change to text mode or run in Terminal.
  7. Enter sudo sh MathInstaller to start the installer.
  8. Press Enter to accept the default installation directory for Mathematica, or enter a new location and press Enter.
  9. After the files are copied to your hard drive, press Enter to accept the default location in which to copy the executable scripts, or type a new location and press Enter.
  10. When the installation is complete, exit Terminal mode or press Ctrl-Alt-F7.
  11. Go to usr/local/Wolfram/Mathematica/8.0/Executables.
  12. Double-click Mathematica.
  13. Click Run.
  14. The Wolfram Product Activation dialog appears. Enter your activation key, which was sent to your UB email account. Click Activate to activate online.
  15. You must accept the terms of the license agreement to activate the software. Select I accept the terms of this agreement and click OK.
