Trouble logging in, or can’t connect to the network? It’s nothing the CIT Help Desk can’t fix.

Gabrielle Gosset (UB Student, Class of 2016) is studying Electrical Engineering and dreams of inventing something someday. In her free time, she enjoys writing, playing video games and watching cooking shows.

Room of Wonders

The CIT Help Desk offers technical support for all UB students, faculty and staff. There is a walk up counter in the Lockwood 2nd floor cybrary and a call center for assistance. Anthony Smith, Student Assistant Resource Manager with Network and Classroom Services (NCS), part of the VPCIO’s area and UB Information Technology, also suggests that the UB community “become familiar with UBIT Alerts, which provides the UB community information about IT service outages and scheduled maintenance.“

The most frequent calls that the Help Desk receives are related to UBITNames and passwords. Whether it’s a forgotten password or compromised account, the Help Desk can help anyone from UB reset their password and get control of their account again. To request a password reset, the CIT Help Desk has to see your ID in person or via fax.

Beyond the Resets

But it’s not all resetting passwords. The CIT Help Desk provides assistance for many other tech problems. For example, when students were moving in before the first week of classes, consultants were assisting parents and students in the residence halls connect to UB’s network. Anthony said, “The CIT Help Desk is here to help students, staff, faculty and alumni get connected to UB Secure Wi-Fi or ResNet, access their UBITName account or use technology in learning spaces.”

In cases of hardware problems or viruses, the CIT Help Desk will direct customers to VITEC Solutions device repair, which has a drop-off location in Lockwood 2nd floor cybrary, or an off-campus outlet such as Geek Squad through Best Buy.

Check the Website

Help is often just a click away through the UBIT website. The site offers detailed instructions for getting connected and other UBIT services.

“The UBIT website is a great place to start when you’re looking for answers,” said Anthony. “The site includes contact points for various departments throughout campus.”
