North Carolina school takes down controversial segregation-era display

LaGarrett King appeared on NBC News Now to discuss how public schools teach Black history. The report centered on a North Carolina school that removed a controversial display of a segregation-era entrance signs that were placed on a pair of school doors. “As a society, we have what I would call oppression fatigue,” he said. Still, he said that discussing of topics that can be uncomfortable is necessary for all schools, and that it’s part of facing and learning about the nation’s history. “You can’t teach integration without teaching segregation, right. And those doors right there just seem like [were] and aspect to start a conversation.”
