Why hip-hop feels like home

The New York Times featured Bakari Kitwana about the central theme of home in hip-hop songs over the past 50 years. Kitwana, founder of the lecture series, "Rap Sessions," and author of "The Hip-Hop Generation,” says that the tradition of "shouting out where you're from," in songs began in the 1980s. “As hip-hop starts to expand beyond New York City, then it becomes almost a competition to be the first one from your city to put your city on the hip-hop map.”
