An article in Psychology Today about what individuals can do to combat feelings of loneliness reports on research by Michael Poulin, who studied more than 800 people who had lived high-stress lives involving war and other trauma and found that while high stress usually predicted a shorter life, this was not the case for those who engaged in volunteering.
