Michael Poulin, associate professor of psychology, is quoted in articles in USA Today and the Louisville Courier-Journal about the millions of people who are buying Powerball tickets in the vague hope of striking it rich. “Humans have vivid imaginations, and even an outcome that is almost certainly not going to happen can feel tantalizingly close, if we dwell on the possibility,” he said. “Combine that with incurring only a small loss for the chance to dream, and many people will take it.”
