Ex-speaker Dennis Hastert pleads guilty in hush money case

Anthony O’Rourke, associate professor of law, is quoted in an article in USA Today about yesterday’s guilty plea by former U.S. House speaker Dennis Hastert to making dozens of illegally structured bank withdrawals as part of an effort to pay hush money to someone from his past for decades-old misconduct. “Judges are human beings,” he said. “The political visibility of this case and the common understanding of what happened may influence the judge.”
