Bridge-engineering expert discusses design of Tappen Zee Bridge in Scientific American

An article in Scientific American about the cost-effective design being used in the new Tappan Zee Bridge in New York City quotes Jerome O’Connor, director of UB’s Institute of Bridge Engineering. “It’s a rule of thumb – a third of the cost of the project is underground or under the water,” he said. “You can spend a lot on the piles and piers.”
