An article on the front page of the Buffalo News reports on a new UB study about the harmful effects of algae in the Great Lakes, and interviews Berat Haznedaroglu, assistant professor of civil, structural and environmental engineering. “Sunlight has a certain disinfectant property,” he said. “The algae being on top of the surface somehow creates a protective habitat from sunlight, so their survival in the water gets extended.”
