Local TV and radio covered the announcement yesterday that UB, representing a group of eight research universities and institutions including the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute (HWI), has received a $25 million grant from the National Science Foundation to develop new X-ray imaging of biomolecules that will speed the discovery of new pharmaceuticals. Eaton Lattman, UB professor of structural biology and CEO of HWI, was quoted in the YNN report describing the highly competitive nature of the grant: "It means that experts all over the country and from foreign countries valued what we proposed almost above everything else that they got to see in a very elaborate review process.” Thomas Grant, UB postdoctoral researcher in structural biology at HWI, also was quoted. Pieces of a video produced by University Communications and CFA appeared in several of the TV stories.
