An article in The Economist reports both Buffalo and Rochester are seeing a resurgence, and looks at factors that are contributing to their re-growth. The article notes that higher education is a big employer in Buffalo, and UB is the second-largest employer, with plans to move its medical school downtown, and that UB's Center for Urban Studies and the city's housing authority are combining to help a neighborhood in need. The article also mentions the UB-Kaleida Health Gates Vascular Institute/Clinical and Translational Research Center, which it calls one of Buffalo's "architectural gems."
