Media Advisory: UB volunteers to make Buffalo neighborhoods brighter as part of UB Community Day

Release Date: October 27, 2017

BUFFALO, N.Y. – More than 100 student volunteers from the University at Buffalo will help local residents with community improvement and neighborhood beautification projects from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at part of UB Community Day.

The UB Office of Community Relations holds UB Community Day twice each year to help clean up neighborhoods and assist local agencies with painting and other projects. In addition to benefiting the community, the event helps foster better relationships with residents and shows students the value of getting involved in neighborhood projects.

It’s a chance for the university community go give back to the city it loves and demonstrate UB’s commitment to the neighborhoods around its campuses.

This year, UB volunteers will rake the front and back yards at Compass House, then join clients who are interested in baking Halloween goodies. Other volunteer opportunities will include cleaning up Sisti Park and planting bulbs that will beautify the park in the spring; cleaning and organizing the Matt Urban Hope Center to prepare it to receive those seeking shelter; supervising children’s activities, sorting clothing and other projects at the Jericho Road Community Health Center; and cleaning and painting at the Macedonia Baptist Church.

UB volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at Harriman Hall on the South Campus before heading out to locations near the South and Downtown campuses.

Best time and location for media: 10-11 a.m. at the corner of Minnesota and Cordova avenues, near Main Street, where UB students will be working with members of the Minnesota Block Club to rake, weed and clean up center medians on the street.

Press arrangement, on site: Tess Morrissey, director of community relations, at 716-572-1996.
