BUFFALO, N.Y. – Experimental teaching classrooms, video recording studios, group study spaces with 80-inch monitors and 1,000 power outlets to support USB chargers are a few of the features the University at Buffalo will unveil during the grand reopening celebration for the Oscar A. Silverman Library, which receives nearly 1.3 million visits each year.

Just in time for the start of the new academic year on Aug. 29, UB recently completed a two-year, $7.2 million renovation that transformed the library into a vibrant, state-of-the-art, intellectual hub for the campus.

What: The grand reopening celebration for Silverman Library will offer the campus community and media the first opportunity to view the redesigned space.

UB President Satish K. Tripathi; Provost Charles F. Zukoski; A. Scott Weber, senior vice provost for academic affairs; H. Austin Booth, vice provost for University Libraries; New York State Assemblyman Robin Schimminger (D-Kenmore); and UB alum Hillary Chiarella will deliver remarks. The program will also include music by jazz ensemble The Jon Lehning Sextet.

When: 4 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 24.

Where: Silverman Library on the third floor of Capen Hall on the UB North Campus.

Why: The redesign of Silverman Library is the first milestone of the Heart of the Campus initiative, a UB 2020 initiative to enhance the student experience by converting Capen Hall into the center of the academic spine, complete with student, learning, library and dining services.

In addition to high-tech classrooms and video recording studios, Silverman Library also includes:

  • A grand reading room that features rich oak woodwork and archival images reflecting UB’s legacy,
  • Media editing suites that students and faculty can use to create and edit video productions,
  • A café, a gender-neutral bathroom and a lactation room for new mothers.
