BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Six students in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University at Buffalo received awards at the department's graduation convocation ceremony held earlier this month.

Al'ai A. Flores of Amherst, Kris E. Spaeth of Lancaster and Donna M. Esposito of Harriman received the Sidney M. and Marjorie McCroskey Endowment Scholarship Award. Recipients of the award, which recognizes and financially supports outstanding undergraduate students in the biological sciences, are selected on the basis of academic achievement, laboratory research, independent study experience and financial need. The McCroskey fund was established in honor of the McCroskeys, both strong supporters of UB. Sidney McCroskey attended UB in 1930.

Gemma May of Getzville received the Christopher White Memorial Award, which is presented to an outstanding senior who will attend graduate school. The award is given in honor of White, who earned bachelor's and master's degrees in biological sciences from UB. White was killed in an automobile accident in 1998.

Heidi Vance of Orchard Park received the Irving R. Knobloch Endowment Scholarship Award, which provides financial assistance to a select number of outstanding students in the biological sciences. The scholarship was endowed by Knobloch, professor emeritus at Michigan State University who received bachelor's and master's degrees from UB.

Daniel Lighthouse of Rochester was named Outstanding Senior in the Department of Biological Sciences.
