BUFFALO, N.Y. -- William Carl, D.D.S, a dental researcher at the University at Buffalo and Roswell Park Cancer Institute, has received his third International Service Award from the American Dental Association.

Carl was honored this month for his work with residents in remote areas of Kenya.

He previously received the award for his clinical work in Haiti, Honduras and Sierra Leone. His attempt to provide similar service in Peru was halted because of political unrest.

He has been performing international service since 1976.

Carl, a clinical associate professor of fixed prosthodontics in the UB School of Dental Medicine, treated up to 100 patients a day in Kenya. Many of the patients for whom he performed basic extractions were treated under a tree because of the lack of electricity and clinic facilities.

Carl, senior cancer dental surgeon at Roswell Park, lives in Hamburg.
