The More Oral Bacteria, the Higher the Risk of Heart Attack, UB study shows.
04/01/09 Several studies have suggested there is a connection between organisms that cause gum disease and the development of heart disease, but few studies have tested this theory. A study conducted at the University at Buffalo, where the gum disease/heart disease connection was uncovered, now has shown that two oral pathogens in the mouth were associated with an increased risk of having a heart attack, but that the total number of germs, regardless of type, was more important to heart health.

Creed Cardon, a second-year dental student, made that question the subject of his research in the UB School of Dental Medicine's Student Research Program. His results, and those of 47 other research projects undertaken by student and post-doctoral researchers, will be presented to fellow students and their faculty advisors at the annual Dental Student Research Day.

Nasal Spray May End Dental Needle Injections for Upper Teeth Repair
02/17/09 A nasal spray shown to numb the upper jaw is set to be tested in an FDA Phase 3 trial, which will assess the spray's effectiveness compared to the current "gold standard" treatment -- painful anesthesia injections. The Phase 3 trial will be carried out later in 2009 at the UB dental school and other clinical sites.
