An article in The Wall Street Journal on home remodeling that allows seniors to remain in their homes longer reports that in 1999 the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Aging published a study in which a group of people age 60 and older received some basic assistive technology, with the group 18 months later racking up just one-third of the medical costs of a group who didn't receive the modifications. The article quotes Machiko Tomita, clinical associate professor of rehabilitation science, who said, "If people used the assistive technology, they could maintain their functional status. If they didn't, they declined." Go to article.
