UB's Carl Dennis Named Winner of Pulitzer Prize in Poetry

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Carl Dennis, professor of English at the University at Buffalo, today was named recipient of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his eighth collection of poems, "Practical Gods" (Penguin Books).

The award for a distinguished volume of original verse by an American author carries a cash prize of $7,500.

In 2000, Dennis was recipient of the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, one of the most prestigious literary awards in the English language awarded by Poetry Magazine.

The New York Times has written of Dennis' poetry that it is "wise, original and often deeply moving." It "eases the reader out of accustomed modes of seeing and perceiving."
