Homelessness, health issues affecting homeless populations, recovery from alcohol and other drug problems

Elizabeth Bowen is an expert on homelessness and the ways in which homeless populations are impacted by health issues, including addiction and recovery, HIV/AIDS and food insecurity. She can speak to the media about homelessness in Buffalo and nationally.

Bowen is the UB Faculty Liaison to the National Homelessness Social Work Initiative.

She works with several homeless-service organizations in Buffalo and has conducted community-based research with people impacted by homelessness in the region. Her research interests include improving housing and social service delivery for homeless youth and understanding how housing and homelessness contribute to the risk and severity of multiple health conditions, such as HIV/AIDS, addictions and food insecurity. Bowen recently led a team to develop a new measure of recovery capital, the resources that help people sustain recovery from alcohol and other drug problems.
