The Department of Mathematics is pleased to announce that, as of July 1, 2018, Dr. Gino Biondini will be named department chair. Dr. Biondini takes over from Dr. David Hemmer who on the same day will begin to serve as dean of Michigan Technological University’s College of Sciences and Arts.

Dr. Hemmer served two 3-year terms as department chair. Dr. Hemmer’s leadership efforts improved undergraduate education and contributed to community outreach while bringing innovation and new life to the department with numerous new faculty hires and growth in academic programs. During that time, in addition to teaching, he facilitated the annual Myhill Lecture Series, and led the department’s Digital Communication Transformation. He also negotiated the philanthropic donation that established the Summer Math Scholarship, and was active in the department’s hosting of the 2017AMS Sectional Meeting.

We look forward to an equally successful term from Dr. Biondini, who will combine administrative skills with research interests in applied mathematics, nonlinear waves, solitons, integrable systems, inverse problems, applied probability, stochastic processes, and optics.
