NEH Summer Stipends

Summer Stipends support continuous full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two consecutive months.  The program focuses on stimulating new research in the humanities and its publication by supporting the work of individual scholars doing research or writing. NEH funds may support recipients’ compensation, travel, and other costs related to the proposed scholarly research.

Note:  Join the Webinar to hear about changes to the Summer Stipend Program on May, 15, 2024, 2:00-3:00 PM. Updated guidelines will be posted June 18, 2024.

Funding Available: $8,000

Number of Applications allowed: Tenured or tenure-track applicants are limited to one per institution.

To Apply: Brief project overview (2 pages) to include: Project title, project description, project competencies, stage of the project that will be funded and workplan/timeline. 

 

William T. Grant Scholars
The William T. Grant Scholars Program supports career development for promising early-career researchers. The program funds five-year research and mentoring plans that significantly expand researchers’ expertise in new disciplines, methods, and content areas.

Funding Available: $350,000

Number of Applications allowed: Major divisions (e.g., College of Arts and Sciences, Medical School) of an institution may nominate only one applicant each year.

To Apply: Nominator should provide a brief abstract of the nominees proposed research plans and their relevance to policy and practice in the Foundation’s focus areas. Include a CV or current Biosketch of the nominee.


Sinsheimer Scholar Award
J.P. Morgan and Alexandrine and Alexander L. Sinsheimer Fund Sinsheimer Scholar Award provides funding to individuals who demonstrate potential for making major contributions with respect to the prevention or cure of human disease. Priority will be given to funding researchers who have not yet received prestigious awards for their research.   

Eligibility:

  • JSMBS faculty are eligible to apply. 
  • Researchers must be within five years of being appointed Assistant Professor. 
  • The Sinsheimer Fund places priority on funding researchers who have not received prestigious awards for their research. Researchers who have already obtained substantial independent funding will likely not qualify for this award (e.g. major NIH awards).

Funding Available: $200,000 over two years (up to $100,000 each year); indirect costs are not allowed

Number of Applications allowed: One application per institution

To Apply: 

  • Research Plan: Specific aims, significance of research and/or broader impact to the field; Design/methods and Expected results.  Indicate how you plan to use the funds that would be most transformative for your research and indicate if there is overlap with any other funding (2 pages).
  • Letter of recommendation from Chair (1 page)
  • CV with Bibliography of publications


Brain Research Foundation Scientific Innovation Awards
Scientific Innovation Awards are $150,000 2-year grants directed at projects that may be too innovative and speculative for traditional funding sources, but still have a high likelihood of producing important findings. The Principal Investigator (PI) must be an associate or full professor working in the field of neuroscience. This funding mechanism is designed to support creative, exploratory, cutting-edge research in well-established research laboratories, under the direction of established investigators.

NSF PFI
The Partnerships for Innovation (PFI) Program within the Division of Translational Impacts (TI) offers researchers from all disciplines of science and engineering funded by NSF the opportunity to perform translational research and technology development, catalyze partnerships and accelerate the transition of discoveries from the laboratory to the marketplace for societal benefit.

Funding Available: PFI- Technology Translation (PFI-TT) projects will be funded for up to $550,000 for 18-24 months per award; approximately 15-35 awards are anticipated. PFI-Research Partnerships (PFI-RP) projects will be funded for up to $1,000,000 for 36 months; approximately 10-20 awards are anticipated.

Number of Applications allowed: There is no limit on the number of PFI-TT proposals an organization may submit to the deadlines of this solicitation. However, an organization may not submit more than one (1) new or resubmitted PFI-RP proposal to a deadline of this solicitation.

To Apply: Name of PI and current NSF Biosketch. One page Project Summary written in the third person and consists of an overview, a statement on the intellectual merit of the proposed activity, a statement on the broader impacts of the proposed activity and shall begin as follows: "This PFI-TT project ..." or “This PFI-RP project….” Do not include proprietary information in the summary (See page 9 of the solicitation).

 

NSF ART

The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks to increase the scale and pace of advancing discoveries made while conducting academic research into tangible solutions that benefit the public. This is the primary aim of the "Accelerating Research Translation" (ART) program. Specifically, the primary goals of this program are to build capacity and infrastructure for translational research at U.S. Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) and to enhance their role in regional innovation ecosystems. In addition, this program seeks to effectively train graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in translational research, benefiting them across a range of career options.

Funding Available: $6,000,000 per award

Number of Applications allowed: One per organization

To Apply: Name of PI and current NSF Biosketch and a one-page Project Summary which consists of three parts: (1) a project overview, (2) a statement on the intellectual merit of the proposed activity, and (3) a statement on the broader impacts of the proposed activity. The last line of the Project Summary must have a list of six keywords. The first two keywords must denote the NSF Directorates that are the most relevant to the initial cohort of STRPs described in the proposal from this list: BIO, CISE, EDU, ENG, GEO, MPS, SBE. Please do not include TIP as one of these directorates.

 

Keck Foundation Grants
The W. M. Keck Research Program seeks to benefit humanity by supporting Medical Research and Science & Engineering projects that are distinctive and novel in their approach, question the prevailing paradigm, or have the potential to break open new territory in their field.

Limited Submission Due: 6/10/2024

Sponsor Deadline: 11/1/2024 - Phase I

Funding Available: Budgets are typically $2M or less

Number of Applications allowed:  UB will select four projects per research program for consideration by the foundation.

To Apply: A one page concept paper with project title, name of PI, overview of the project emphasizing unique aspects and pilot studies.  Indicate area of emphasis for project – Medical Research or Science and Engineering Research. Description of methodologies and identification of key personnel, justification of need for Keck support and brief budget breakdown by major areas, e.g., personnel, equipment, consumable supplies, etc. Concept paper must be 12 pt. font with 1-inch margins.


NSF MRI

The MRI Program provides for state-of-the-art instruments through acquisition from vendors and development of next-generation research instruments that advance the state-of-the-art in science and engineering research. For development proposals the Program seeks to leverage the strengths of private sector partners to build instrument development capacity at MRI submission-eligible organizations.

Sponsor Deadline: 11/15/2024

Funding Available: Track 1: Track 1 MRI proposals are those that request funds from NSF greater than or equal to $100,0001 and less than $1,400,000. Track 2: Track 2 MRI proposals are those that request funds from NSF greater than or equal to $1,400,000 up to and including $4,000,000.Track 3 MRI proposals are those that request funds from NSF greater than or equal to $100,0001 and less than or equal to $4,000,000 for requests that include the purchase, installation, operation, and maintenance of equipment and instrumentation to reduce consumption of helium.

Number of Applications allowed: Two (2) in Track 1, one (1) in Track 2 and one (1) in Track 3.

To Apply: Title of Project - "MRI: Track #____". One-page brief description and need for equipment, including location.  Include a separate list of users and 3 quotes.
