Good morning!

I would like to acknowledge and thank New York State Assembly Member McMahon and New York State Senator Ryan for joining us today.

And I am delighted to be with all of you to celebrate the World University Games Torch Relay.

As you know, having the torch here marks a homecoming of sorts for UB, as we hosted the World University Summer Games in 1993. At that time—nearly 3 decades ago—some 5,000 athletes from around the globe converged on UB and Buffalo to compete in the games. It was the first and only time the summer games have been held in the U.S.

Of course, it was a very proud moment for our university, and our region.

Although aspects of our campus infrastructure had to be built up in order to host the games—this stadium being the most obvious example—in some ways, UB was a natural fit for the games.

That’s because UB has long been renowned as a global university—an institution that attracts students from around the world; where we collaborate across borders to address issues impacting our planet; and where we consider our diversity of backgrounds, experience and viewpoints among our greatest strengths.

It is wonderful to see the games returning to New York State—and with them, the spirit of international sportsmanship and camaraderie that makes them so inspiring to watch.

I wish our friends and colleagues at SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Canton and across the Adirondack region a most successful World University Games.

Thank you!
