Teaching

Teaching is an art that requires not only subject matter expertise but also effective communication, pedagogical strategies and a deep understanding of diverse student needs. Whether you are thinking about teaching, going into a PhD or want to further develop your skills, we've got the resources for you.
  • The Preparing for Academic Careers Seminar Series is held during the spring semester and is offered to postdoctoral scholars and graduate students, on various topics in teaching and learning. This series covers topics on how to engage and motivate students, how to develop a teaching philosophy statement for academic job applications, and more.
  • Offered by the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), the Effective Teaching micro-credential will prepare participants to be more effective educators. This micro-credential is free and open to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.
  • The Office of Inclusive Excellence offers tips, resources and events for Inclusive Pedagogy. Find recordings of past events, and view upcoming webinars and self-paced online courses.

Mentoring

As a master's student it is important to gain experience mentoring others and to cultivate mentoring relationships of your own that support your professional development and career aspirations. Whether you want to connect with a mentor or be a mentor, you can find opportunities throughout UB.
  • The Network for Enriched Academic Relationships (NEAR) is a transdisciplinary online mentoring directory for students to find faculty mentors and allies beyond their substantive research areas. Students can connect with current faculty members in a variety of departments to receive guidance and support around many different topics and issues of importance.
