TABE (Test Assessing Basic Education)

TABE, which stands for Test Assessing Basic Education, is a diagnostic test used to determine a person’s skill levels and aptitudes.

Many companies use TABE in hiring, promotions, or for selecting employees for training programs for skilled positions. The TABE test is also used by public service agencies who are guiding people into adult education programs, such as getting a high school equivalency (HSE), going to trade school, etc.

TABE tests your skills and aptitudes in reading, math and English, as you will apply these skills in the workforce or classroom.

You do not “pass” or “fail” the TABE test. However, your score can determine your eligibility for many programs that can have a positive effect on your life situation, so it is important to be prepared for the test.

You can study and take practice tests online at the TABE website. These practice tests include detailed instructions for testing, and let you get comfortable using the tools used for the actual test.

All potential Buffalo EOC students looking to enroll in our High School Equivalency program or an Allied Health program must take a TABE test as a part of their admissions process.

The New GED

The GED exam is a well-recognized test of the academic knowledge and skills needed for college and career readiness as defined by New York State Education Department (NYSED) standards for adult education.

NYSED has contracted with the GED Testing Service (GEDTS) for the provision of the NYS High School Equivalency (HSE) exam, beginning in January 2022. This exam will be the new assessment offered to obtain a High School Equivalency Diploma in New York State.

The GED is currently used by over 40 states and previously served as the NYS HSE exam from the 1940s-2014 when the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) was adopted. The Data Recognition Corporation (DRC) discontinued the TASC effective December 31, 2021.

The GED is available to students as young as 16 years who have officially exited high school and are looking to achieve their high school equivalency (HSE) diploma. Buffalo EOC students and community members (those not enrolled as EOC students) who do not have a high school diploma can sign up for the GED online. You can create a testing profile on the GED website

The GED® test is scored by GEDTS. All records are received and verified through the NYSED HSE Office. If a NYS HSE diploma has been earned as the result of testing, an official transcript and diploma will be mailed 8-10 weeks from time of testing. Results will be mailed to the address provided on a candidates GED® account.

Official transcripts will not be issued for scores that do not result in a diploma. Scores can be confirmed through an examinees GED® account. Examinees can also request copies of their official scores through the H application process.
