Nicholas Mori: Towards a Read-Speech Corpus of Kom Verbal Arts

What I Did

 I have worked with Dr. Matthew Faytak for one year on creating a corpus of the Kom language in Cameroon. It is an under-researched language, and our corpus allows us to analyze the language’s sound system. In order to make this project possible, we transcribed all the Kom recording data that Dr. Faytak collected last year. Through always consulting with my mentor in the process and using a software system called Praat for the first time, which is designed for language transcription, I learned the importance of communication within a research team and the use of new technology in conducting research.   

What I Learned

This research experience has taught me that you can actually apply what you learn in school to real-life phenomena and questions into which you are interested in diving. Through participating in this project, I have developed my professionalism and research skills that I currently possess as an aspiring linguist, and they will continue to help me strive towards my passion for linguistics.
