American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Julius Axelrod Award in Pharmacology

The Julius Axelrod Award in Pharmacology was established in 1991 to recognize pharmacologists who, like the award’s namesake, have made significant contributions to understanding the biochemical mechanisms underlying the pharmacological actions of drugs and who have demonstrated mentorship to other pharmacologists.

Margarita L. Dubocovich

SUNY Distinguished Professor Margarita L. Dubocovich, PhD, is the world’s foremost authority on melatonin receptors. Her pioneering work has revealed melatonin's impact on circadian rhythms, sleep disorders, depression, and cancer.  Throughout her distinguished career she has been committed to training the next generation of leaders in biomedical, behavioral and STEM disciplines, and to building diverse and inclusive communities of  students, fellows, and junior faculty. She established UB’s CLIMB (Collaborative Learning and Integrated Mentoring in the Biosciences) and iSEED (Institute of Strategic Enhancement of Educational Diversity) programs, designed to attract future leaders, providing mentorship needed to succeed. In recognition of her ground-breaking research and her extraordinary mentorship contributions, in 2022 she received the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Julius Axelrod Award in Pharmacology.
