The award’s purpose is to recognize an individual who has made particularly noteworthy and sustained contributions to the information science field. The award is based on 3 criteria: impact on theory, scholarship, and practice; exemplary leadership and sustained involvement; and education and mentoring.

Heidi Julien, PhD, is an international leader in information science whose research focuses on digital literacy and information behavior. She is widely published in her field’s top journals, and her scholarship has been funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, among others. Julien has been a visiting professor at universities worldwide, and she has served as editor or on the editorial board of numerous journals. She is a past-president of the Association for Library & Information Science Education and also the Canadian Association of Information Science. She also served as chair of the Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) SIG USE. In 2025, Julien received the ASIS&T Award of Merit, the association’s highest honor.
