This is open to tenured and tenure-track faculty (or equivalent) at State-operated campuses and community colleges who have teaching obligations during the 2026-2027 academic year and anticipate having continued teaching obligations in 2027-2028. This community of practice is intended for faculty who teach undergraduate courses and who have not previously integrated discipline-specific AI-enabled skills in course-level student learning outcomes or who are at the beginning stages of this kind of work.

The goal of this work is for each participating faculty member to:

• Update faculty-selected course(s) to integrate discipline-specific AI-enabled skills, and as applicable and practicable use of AI-based tools from the field, that will enhance student learning and preparedness for success in their field.
• Update faculty-led course-level assessment practices in the selected course(s) to ensure students’ knowledge and skills are being measured with fidelity and integrity in ways that account for common uses of AI while preserving validity of assessment results.

Selected course(s) should be in the major, regularly offered (e.g., annually), and required or an elective that has consistently significant student enrollment as defined by the campus and appropriate for the course type and program(s) to which it applies. Faculty who teach both undergraduate and graduate courses may propose to update courses at both degree levels, but at least one of the proposed courses must be at the undergraduate level.

For the community of practice, faculty will be grouped into one of eight disciplinary clusters, as follows: Arts; Business; Education; Health Professions; Humanities; Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics; Social Sciences; Trades, with the goal of including representation from associate and baccalaureate degree levels within each cluster.

The community of practice will be supported by the SUNY AI for the Public Good Fellows, SUNY Faculty Advisory Council on Teaching and Technology (FACT2) Task Group on Discipline-Specific AI Tools, and Association of College and University Educators (ACUE), which will provide participating faculty access to professional learning opportunities through the ACUE Commons

Each participating faculty member will receive a stipend of $2,500, to be issued in two installments, $1,000 following completion of work in the fall 2026 semester and $1,500 following completion of work in the spring 2027 semester.

The scope of work includes the following:

Participate in the following professional learning activities to acquire knowledge of discipline-specific AI enabled skills and AI-based tools from the field to develop ideas on how to update the selected course(s):

• Monthly community of practice meetings (November 2026 – April 2027), which will consist of alternating meetings of the full group and a discipline-specific group
• Complete a set of Quick Study learning modules to earn the ACUE Endorsement in AI for Higher Ed
• Engage in selected learning modules offered by the AI 4 Learning Network

For course(s) selected to be updated:

• By January 15, 2027, submit to the Office of Academic Affairs at System Administration a plan that describes the status and next steps in the course update process
• By May 31, 2027, submit to the Office of Academic Affairs at System Administration the pre- and post-update course syllabi, which will be uploaded to the SUNY Open Access Repository (SOAR) for sharing with other faculty under a Creative Commons license (authors of syllabi will retain copyright)
• Commit to seeking approval for updated course(s) through applicable campus processes if necessary, implementing updated course(s) in 2027-2028 if offered, assessing updated course(s) that are offered, and sharing lessons learned with the Office of Academic Affairs at System Administration

Commit to sharing your work through seminars, brown bags, or other professional learning activities

Provide input and feedback to the FACT2 Task Group on Discipline-Specific AI Tools to inform their report and recommendations to the System Provost

• Application Due Date: September 25, 2026
• Selection Notification Date: On or about October 9, 2026
• Community of Practice Launch: November 2026

Each application must include confirmation from the faculty member’s department chair or direct supervisor that affirms: 1. The faculty member meets the eligibility requirements; 2. The campus supports participation in the stated activities, and the faculty member is reasonably expected to have an opportunity to implement the work; 3. The selected course(s) meet the selection criteria; and 4. Any resulting curricular changes will proceed through typical campus processes.

Campuses are encouraged to submit multiple applications.
