From Lectures to Lessons: Using Technology in Your Classroom

In this video, Christopher Cohan, Ph.D., delves into his extensive teaching and pedagogical knowledge, detailing the development and deployment of numerous teaching materials, including a dedicated website he uses to teach second-year medical students. He also discusses how the evolution of learning spurred major changes in the way he teaches to emphasize self-directed learning and problem-solving of our modern student learners.

Kevin Hittle is the Digital Learning Designer on the Teaching Transformation team within CATT. He holds a Master of Science in Curriculum Development and Instructional Technology from the University at Albany and a Bachelor of Music in Tuba Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM).

Christopher Cohan is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor, an instructor and course director for the Neuroscience and Behavior module for second-year medical students in the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. His current work is also devoted to creating specimens for the Brain Museum in the Jacobs School and maintaining its collection.

The Teaching Technology Integrations Gateway contains a comprehensive list of digital learning technologies that are integrated into UB Learns, classroom technologies supported in centrally scheduled classrooms and resources for designing course content to take advantage of supported digital and classroom technology. It is also the first stop faculty and staff need to visit in order to request new technologies.

The campus learning management system employs a number of technology integrations to enhance face-to-face, online, hybrid and hyflex instruction.

Faculty and staff can utilze the gateway to request new and innovative teaching technologies to implement in the classroom. Please keep in mind, however, this process can take 12 to 34 weeks. We recommend you begin planning a year before you intend to use a new teaching technology as each new technology is carefully reviewed to ensure only the highest quality tools are implemented into a class. Some key considerations include:

• Accessibilty: Students and the public with disabilities must be able to access the required tool.
• Legal Implications: No technology can be in violation of the Electronic and Information Technology (EIT) Accessibility Policy, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the New York State Human Rights Law.
• Security: The following security concerns need to be considered when requesting new technologies.
  
  • Possible breach of personally identifiable, FERPA, and/or HIPAA information .
  • Possible violation of the use of Category 1 or Category 2 data per the Data Risk Classification Policy.
    
• Integration Capabilities: The ability of central services to integrate products or provide adequate support needs to be reviewed.
  
• Financial Implications: No technology acquisition can be in violation of UB's rules for conducting financial transactions.
