State Health Commissioner to Lead Pediatrics Grand Rounds

BUFFALO, N.Y. – By far, the most impactful health advances of the past century, such as eradicating infectious diseases, have come about because of strides made in public health.

That’s why James V. McDonald, MD, MPH, New York State Commissioner of Health, will be giving a virtual talk about public health as an excellent career choice for those in the health sciences when he is the guest speaker at 8 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, in the Department of Pediatrics grand rounds in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo.
Titled “Public Health…oh the places you go, the people you meet…,” the talk is open to faculty, staff, students and trainees at UB.
The focus will be on how public health is changing and why it’s an optimal career choice for those who want to make a difference.

Board certified in pediatrics as well as preventive medicine, McDonald earned his MD from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago and his MPH from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He did his pediatric residency in the U.S. Navy.
His diverse career includes officership in the U.S. Navy, as well as private practice in rural areas where health care shortages existed. McDonald also served in the Indian Health Service in the Navajo Nation, serving as medical director of outpatient medicine in Chinle, Arizona.
