Korean Studies Program

In Spring 2025, the Asia Research Institute launched the Korean Studies Program, a non-degree program built on the many initiatives developed with a three-year seed grant from the Academy of Korean Studies and now funded primarily by a five-year Academy of Korean Studies core university grant. The core of the Korean Studies Program is a vibrant group of UB professors engaged in research about Korea and teaching a growing list of Korea-focused classes.

The Korean Studies Program helps to support and promote Korean language and culture courses that are part of degree programs in the Department of Linguistics and the Asian Studies Program. As a constituent unit of ARI, the program also includes:

  • an annual Korean studies conference
  • ongoing research hubs on Design Korea and Korean Diaspora in the U.S.
  • an ongoing lecture series in Korean studies
  • an annual week-long artist-in-residence program
  • new opportunities for students to study in Korea
  • the Gyeonggi Youth Ladder Summer Program at UB
  • funding opportunities for faculty and students

    With grant funding from the Academy of Korean Studies, the Asia Research Institute provides seed funding for faculty research projects, faculty conference travel support, and funding to develop new Korean studies classes or classroom modules.
  • International Education Research Grants

    Through the University at Buffalo Office of International Education (OIE), faculty and graduate students at UB who work on Asia-related topics have the opportunity to apply for funding to support their research.
  • Nila T. Gnamm Fund

    Managed by the UB APEC Study Center, in conjunction with the Department of Geography and Asian Studies Program, the Nila T. Gnamm Fund supports UB faculty and student research projects related to the study of Southeast Asia, including projects conducted in affiliation with the Asia Research Center.
  • Asia Research Institute Faculty Grants

    The UB Asia Research Institute (ARI) offers research grants of up to $3,000 on a competitive basis to support scholarly research or creative work related to Asia and Asian diasporas. Funds can support research travel; purchase and collection of data; subvention or other publication expenses; and student research assistants.
