Events & Quizzes Spread Cyber Security Month Awareness

UB’s Information Security Office is hosting two events and four online quizzes to educate the campus during October National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Not only can you learn how to stay safer online, you could also win some great prizes.

Rachel Lim (UB Student, Class of 2015) was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She is proficient in speaking and writing three languages- English, Mandarin and Malay. Rachel is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in business administration with a focus in financial analysis and marketing.

On October 22, UB’s Information Security Office will partner with Greek Life to host the “Don’t Get Taken!” event in 210 Student Union from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., which focuses on recognizing dangerous situations. If you’re on South Campus, stop by Harriman Hall on October 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to participate in another Cyber Security Awareness event.

At both events, UB students, faculty and staff will have the chance to “phish” for a security question from a Phish Tank and answer it correctly for a prize. Since changing your password often is important to keeping your account safe, attendees can change their UBITName password on site in order to receive a prize, including stress-relief sharks and customized security tip playing cards.

There will also be a special guest appearance from a real-life version of Shark Girl—the popular sculpture situated in Canalside, created by artist Casey Riordan Millard—as a reminder not to “get hooked” by phishing attempts. If you see her at the events, make sure you say hi and take a selfie with her.

If you can’t make the events, you can still visit www.buffalo.edu/ubit/security-quiz to take four weekly quizzes for a chance to win $25 in Campus Cash or FlexiBULL Bucks.  If you complete all four quizzes, you’ll be entered to win $75 in Campus Cash or FlexiBULL Bucks.
